When you rent at the airport, you want to be aware of a trick that happens to some folks. Shortly after driving away from the car rental place you get a flat tire. You pull over. Someone stops to help you. While you are working on the tire, with the helping hand of the person, someone else is cleaning out your car. If you get a flat anywhere in or near San Jose, drive on the rim until you get to a gas station. This is not to scare you, but is just a heads up. There is very little violent crime here. Just sneaky ways to try and get your stuff.
Always be aware of where you park and either be able to see your car, or park in a professional parking area. There are enough visitors to this area that are all packing notebook computers, iPods, cameras, and passports that there are some pretty crafty folks around looking to liberate these items from their owners. Its a simple matter to be aware of this and avoid problems.
